Sigourney

Wesley Casper Jacobi Jr., better known as Jake Jacobi, passed away at Manor House in Sigourney, IA on Sunday, November 22nd 2020 at the age of 95. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas to Ruby (Baker) and Wesley Casper Jacobi on July 30th, 1925. While Jake was still a young child, his family moved to Iowa. He left school to sign up to fight in World War II at the age of 17 and finished his education while serving his country. He continued his service for over 27 years and retired out of the military in 1971. He received many medals and accommodations including Bronze Star Medal; Good Conduct Medal Bronze Clasp W/6 Loops; National Defense Service Medal W/Oak Leaf Cluster; Korean Service Medal; United Nations Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal W/Device 1960; and the Combat Medical Badge. In his 27 years of service he served in the European Theater in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War with “boots on the ground” in Vietnam. Super Heroes don’t wear capes, they wear dog tags.

In 1987 Jake moved from Virginia to Grinnell, IA where he walked into David and Suellen Seaba’s realty office looking for a place to live. They looked at many houses for the next few years and Jake adopted the Seaba’s as his family and they responded in kind making him an unofficial member of their family as well. In 1991 they finally found him a house in Malcom he would call a home for the next 28 years where he lived with his Best Fur Friends Montgomery and then Barney. When he was 93 years old, he moved to Manor House in Sigourney to be closer to David and Suellen since it was harder and harder for him to live on his own even with assistance.

Jake absolutely loved going out to eat with his newly found family and friends. If he met you and invited you out to dinner with “the gang” you knew he was a friend for life. Before ever leaving the restaurant, Jake would order a hamburger to go for his dog stating “he won’t let me in the door if I don’t bring him back his own burger!” Jake was the epitome of the saying “he is generous to a fault and would give you the shirt off his back.”

Jake was fortunate to get to go on the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight to Washington D.C. David accompanied him for the grand voyage in May of 2017. They had a whirlwind of a day but they both said it was such an amazing and thoughtful experience they were excited to be part of it. The “welcome home parade” at the airport the night they returned was very overwhelming for him. It was the thank you he never got after many of his tours overseas. Jake was a member of the Sigourney American Legion.

Jake will be interned at the Bethel Cemetery in Sigourney, IA next to David and Suellen Seaba. Even though he was raised of the Jewish faith, he attended the Methodist church with the Seaba family many times over the years and asked to be buried next to his family.
