Harold Dean Appleget, 91, of rural Sigourney, passed away June 21, 2019 at the Manor House in Sigourney. Dean was born July 7, 1927 in East Lancaster Township to Myrl and Ethel Hollingsworth Appleget.   Dean grew up in Sigourney area, attended Doggett country school and graduated from Sigourney High school in 1944. He grew up as a farm boy helping his father with the crops and raising cattle. In the off season he worked as an electrician for Oley Potter, worked for Jack Halferty installing televisions and antennas and also worked road construction on Highway 78.  Dean married Jean Barnhart on August 18, 1948 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.
The couple made their first home near Sigourney while Dean was employed by Russ Latcham. In 1950 the couple moved southeast of Sigourney to his parents farm and Dean became a full time farmer. In 1959 they moved to their farm south of Sigourney. Dean was a very active farmer and practiced conservation on his farm. He was a recipient of Keokuk County conservation awards in the district and regional areas. During his career as a farmer, Dean had a dairy herd, and also raised hogs along with growing corn and beans.   In his spare time he enjoyed restoring antique tractors, watching ball games and visiting, especially with the afternoon coffee drinkers at the senior citizens center.
Dean was an active member of the Christian Church in Sigourney where he had served as a trustee, deacon and a courier for many years. The couple became parents of two children Donna and Steven.
Dean is survived by his wife Jean, a daughter Donna Strand and her husband Bob of Geneva, IL. One grandson Eric Strand and his wife Janis of Chicago, two great-grandchildren Dean and Jane Strand, one brother Rex (Barb) Appleget of Cedar Rapids, IA. Two sisters Verna Edmundson of Sigourney, and Ruth Deitrich of Bettendorff, one sister- in- law Rosemary Appleget of Sigourney. Several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Steven and a brother Clarence Appleget.
