Charles Henry Cassens, 89, died January 2, 2021 at his home in Sigourney.. He was born December 8, 1931 to Harvey and Margaret (Goeldner) Cassens in Sigourney, Iowa and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1949. He was active in 4-H and FFA and served his country in the Korean War. Chuck was proud to participate in the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2015 and was accompanied by his brother-in-law Donald Goering and joined by the Jones family.
On July 31, 1955, he married Irene Adams at the Christian Church in Hedrick. Together they farmed southeast of Sigourney, raising four children, playing cards, boating on the Mississippi River, and traveling to tropical beach locations. As the business owner of Cassens’ Mill, he served the community for
over 56 years selling Kent feeds and buying and selling grain. Chuck enjoyed mowing the fields and feeding the fish in the three ponds at their family home west of Sigourney.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Janice LaRose, and son James Henry Cassens. Those left to mourn his passing are his wife Irene, children Janice (Mike) Brown of Sigourney, Iowa; Jean (Dwight) Crevelt of Walnut Grove, Missouri; and Joy (Rusty) Sanner of Rocklin, California, and 8 grandchildren: Tracy Jones, Trisha Brown, Mike Crevelt, Michelle McLemore, Matt Crevelt, Megan Ackerman, Caleb Sanner, and Paige Sanner. Chuck also leaves behind 7 great-grandchildren, Michael, Zachary and Madilyn Jones, Alexis and Elijah McLemore, Daryn Crevelt, and Cayden Ackerman. In addition to being a devoted father and grandfather, he had a special place in his heart for his sisters Kathleen Shaver and Doris Goering and their families.
A military honors graveside service will be held Saturday, June 26, 2021 at 1:30 pm at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life at 3:00 pm near the ponds at the family home. Cards may be sent to Irene Cassens at PO Box 26, Sigourney, IA 52591.
