Carol Hersh

June 6, 1956 — June 15, 2021

Jenks, OK

Services for Carol, at her request, Carol will be laid to rest at a private family graveside service in Sigourney, Iowa. For those in Tulsa, we will hold a small dedication for “Wawa’s Bench” at the Tulsa Zoo in late July or early August with details coming soon. Carol passed away on June 15, 2021, following a battle with cancer. She was born on June 6, 1956, to Louie & Peggy Herman. She grew up on the farm in Iowa with her 5 siblings. She shared stories of hard work, walnut fights, de-tasseling corn and caring for her younger siblings. Carol graduated from Sigourney High School, and a few years later found her perfect mate, Marty.

Carol married Marty Hersh on October 31, 1981, and they had a daughter, Carrie. They traveled construction together while Carrie was young, and ultimately settled in Jenks, Oklahoma as Carrie started Kindergarten. With Carrie starting school, Carol began volunteering at Jenks Public Schools and ultimately took a job in the Technology Department where she worked for many years. She loved working in education and made many dear friends and fond memories working at Jenks. She was the best mom - always supporting Carrie, sharing wisdom, and making sure she had everything she needed to set her up for success in life. Carrie graduating from the University of Tulsa, marrying Chris, and the birth of granddaughter Madelyn were her most cherished moments and source of so much pride.

Carol retired from Jenks Public Schools in 2016 when she learned that Carrie and Chris were expecting a baby. She could not wait to embrace her role as Grandma and kept Madelyn from the time she was born. When Madelyn started talking, she called both Carrie and Carol Mama - finally she got out “Wawa" instead of Grandma and the name stuck. Carol loved being Wawa and was quick to share that these were the happiest and most fulfilling years of her life. She treasured taking Madelyn to all sorts of activities, but their absolute favorite was going to the Tulsa Zoo together.

Carol loved deeply, without judgment and always put others first. She had a servant's heart for helping others, and never complained. She leaves behind many people who love her dearly but has given us a legacy of love and happy memories that will be carried on for generations.

We will miss her, but have peace knowing the best Guardian Angel Wawa will watch over her beloved Marty, Carrie, Chris, and Madelyn.
