Russell E. Smeltzer

Russell E. Smeltzer, 69, died July 15, 2014 at this home in Sigourney, Iowa. He was born March 3, 1945 to John Joseph and Imogene Jurgensen Smeltzer in Anamosa, Iowa. He graduated from Lowden High School in 1963 and attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in Construction Technology in 1966. Russ served in the United State Army from 1966 to 1968. On June 20, 1970 he married Judith Ann Lohmann in Wheatland, Iowa. They moved to Sigourney in 1972. He served as an assistant to the County Engineer until 1999 when he began to work for the State of Iowa as a Construction Tec. Senior.
Russ served on the Sigourney Volunteer Fire Department from 1973 to 1993 serving as Chief the last 14 years. He was a member of the American Legion, St. Mary Catholic Church, Sigourney Golf Club. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous since 1987. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, golfing, and camping.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant brother Vincent Smeltzer.
He is survived by his wife Judy, two daughters Amy (Jeremy) McLaughlin of Wayland, Robyn (Patrick) Miover of Sigourney, and four grandchildren Molly and John McLaughlin, Hanna and Emma Miover, one sister Leslie Miller of Cleveland and brother Dennis Smeltzer of Waterloo.

Funeral Service Friday 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary Catholic Church.
Burial St. Mary Cemetery, Sigourney
Prayer service - Thursday at 4:00 P.M. with visitation 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the Holm Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Sigourney Fire Department, or the Sigourney American Legion.
