Marlene Gwin

October 14, 1934 — September 3, 2025

Jean Marlene McLain Gwin passed away September 3, 2025, due to complications from a recent fall. Marlene was born on October 14, 1934, in Montezuma, IA to Forrest McLain and Stella (McCommon). She grew up on a farm three miles north of Deep River, IA in an area locals referred to as “Irish Ridge.” Marlene was the oldest of two girls. She attended Guernsey and Deep River schools, graduating from Deep River in 1952. Fond childhood memories included trips to Colorado Springs, Colorado where her parents grew up and to southern California, where her maternal grandparents lived. One of her high school highlights was competing in the Iowa High School Girls State Basketball Tournament in her senior year, making it to the semi-finals.

Marlene married Wayne Arnold Gwin on October 24, 1954. In 1966 Marlene and family moved to Sigourney where she resided until moving to English Valley Care Center in September 2024. She raised two children and was an active participant in their childhood activities as a Cub Scout Den Mother, Methodist Youth Fellowship adult leader, and Youth Choir assistant. Plus, she never missed an activity, event, or game her children participated in.

In Marlene’s early married years, she was an avid square dancer and enjoyed spending time dancing with good friends. After her children were grown, she led several Methodist church committees including communion, alter guild, and flowers. She was a proud member of PEO and was committed to their mission of educating young women.

Marlene’s greatest passion, beyond her family, was her flower gardens. She spent the winter planning, the spring planting, and the summer enjoying the cuttings and floral arrangements she made.

Marlene was blessed with two grandsons and truly enjoyed having them grow up nearby. She loved spending many hours with them and making lasting memories.

Marlene is survived by her children; Denise LaRae (Steve) Black of Webster, IA, and Leland Wayne (Anita Johnson) Gwin of Hardeeville, SC. Grandsons Wayne Wesley (Bobbie Jo) Black of Sigourney, IA, and Steven David (Audrey) Black of Delaware, OH; sister Beverly (Don) Gray; great grandson Michael Black; five brother / sister-in-laws; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Wayne.

Memorials may be directed to Keokuk County Conservation Board, Belva Deer Recreation Area.
