Lucille Yates

Evelyn Lucille Yates, 101, died May 29, 2018 at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney. Lucille, the daughter of David and Ila Pottenger was born July 26, 1916 in Spencer, IA. She graduated from Sigourney High School.  Lucille married Bill Yates on September 14, 1938. In 2011 they celebrated 73 years of marriage. Through the years they lived and farmed north of Sigourney where they raised purebred Angus cattle. They retired in 1975.
Lucille was a life-long homemaker, longtime Farm Bureau member and a member of the Sigourney Christian Church. She loved music and humor and was a member of the Keokuk County Farm Bureau Kitchen Band for 43 years. Lucille was a charter member of the band which first performed in July 1969 before 4,000 people on the football field at Sigourney High School celebrating the Sigourney Quasquicentennial. She was known as” Yum-Yum” and her specialty was the washboard. However, she debuted in 1969 on a sax made from a rubber hose, an elbow from a drain pipe and a kitchen funnel. Lucille said her favorite hobby was “people”.  She enjoyed being with them and working with them. She and Bill volunteered at the Food Bank, helped deliver Meals-on-Wheels and served in various positions in the Farm Bureau and the Christian Church.
She is survived by her son Dan (Pat) of Waterloo, IA; two grandchildren Mike (Erin) of Waterloo and Lisa of Austin, TX; three great granddaughters, Samantha and Katelyn of Austin and Emily of Waterloo; one great grandson Jack of Waterloo; sister Pauline of Illinois and various other nieces and nephews.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband Bill on March 16, 2012,   her son Jim; her parents and brothers Willard, Robert, David and John and sisters Henrietta, Charlotte, Frances and Marion.
