Kenneth R. Capps, 88, of Pekin passed away May 5, 2012 at Sunnybrook Assisted Living in Fairfield. He was born May 29, 1923 in Pekin, the son of Ralph and Anna Hayes Capps. His birth was at the family home where he lived all of his life. On September 13, 1950 he married Betty Crouse in Sigourney, Iowa.
Mr. Capps graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1940. He served his country in the Army from 1945-1946. A good portion of that service was in Korea. Kenneth was a farmer all of his life and lived on the family Century Farm. He especially loved to garden. Raising his beautiful flowers was his favorite hobby. His wife and he were members of the Southeast Iowa Day Lily Society.
Kenneth loved his community. He spent many hours as a volunteer for several different organizations. He was a member of the Prairie View Methodist Church. He served in numerous positions at the church.
Kenneth was a 4-H leader. He was president of the Keokuk County Pork Producers. He served as president of the Pekin Ruritan Club. He spent 13 years on the Board of Directors of the Keokuk County Health Center.
His greatest community service came at the local school. He ran the scorer's clock for most of the sporting events at Pekin High and Middle Schools for almost 30 years.
In 1990, Hayden Fry presented him with the IHSA Association Volunteer of the Year Award. In 1993 Governor Terry Branstad recognized him with the Iowa Volunteers Award.
He is survived by his wife Betty; two sons Richard (Susan) of Cedar Falls, and Russell (Deborah) of Pekin, a sister Cora Lea Whitten of Fairfield, six grandchildren; Sarah Jones, Mandy Hay, Erin Capps, John Capps, Morgan Coleman, and Lydia Capps and five great-grandchildren; Payten Coleman, Isaac Jones, Paislee Coleman, Abby Jones, and Pierce Coleman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Leonard and Leland and four sisters, Ila Capps, Alma Steen, Mary Ruth Domanski and Evelyn Hensel. There were also his two closest friends Dick and Betty Miller.

Funeral service-10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Prairie View Methodist Church near Ollie
Visitation- 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at the Prairie View Methodist Church near Ollie
Burial- Mt Zion Cemetery near Martinsburg
Arrangements by Holm Funeral Home in Sigourney.

Memorials may be given to the Prairie View Methodist Church or organizations that Kenneth supported.
