John "Pee Wee" Bruns, a devoted family man, veteran, and lifelong resident of Sigourney, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026, at Manor House Sigourney. Born on September 17, 1937, to Malcom and Bernadeen (Stanfield) Bruns in Sigourney, John’s life was marked by steadfast dedication—to his country, his work, and his loved ones.
He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1955 . PeeWee served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from August 8, 1955, to August 8, 1958. Rising to the rank of Corporal, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, a testament to his discipline and commitment. John was affectionately known by his nickname “Pee Wee”.
On June 11, 1961, he married Elsie May Northup at the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Sigourney. He was employed at F. A. Moser and built culverts, farming the Northup farm and at Sigourney Schools. He later was employed at the Natural Gas Pipeline in Harper and later served as a custodian at the Keokuk County Court House and he retired in 2020. Elise May and PeeWee raised and showed horses for many years.
His passions extended beyond his work and service; he enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, baking apple pies, camping at the Iowa State Fair, and treasured spending time with his family. He was a member of Sigourney Methodist Church, the Iowa Stock horse Association and Iowa Quarter Horse Association. These pursuits were not only hobbies but a vital thread weaving together the fabric of his everyday life.
He is survived by his beloved children, Greg (Darcy) Bruns of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Tim (Sara) Bruns of Sigourney, and Mary (Randy) Brainard of Sigourney, grandchildren Alysia Simmons, Carson Bruns, Matt Brainard, Isaac Bruns, Camden Bruns, and Ella Bruns, as well as his great-grandson Mason Simmons. He is also remembered fondly by his siblings, Donna Decker and Dave (Janice) Bruns many nieces, nephews and extended family.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie May on September 21, 2008. He also mourned the loss of his daughter Christine Bruns, his parents, and siblings Keith Bruns and Kay Sanchez.
John "Pee Wee" Bruns leaves behind a profound legacy of humility, honor, and love. His life was a beacon of quiet strength and unwavering commitment, qualities that endeared him to family, friends, and community members alike. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Visitation: Monday , May 18, 2026 from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Holm Funeral Home
Funeral Service: Tuesday May 19, 2026 10:30 a.m. at the Holm Funeral Home.
