Hester H. Lane

Hester Hannah Hazen Lane, 100, died Thursday August 13, 2009 at her home of 69 years in Sigourney. She was born on November 14, 1908 near What Cheer to Francis Marian and Lora Belle Dolcater Hazen. She attended What Cheer Schools and graduated from What Cheer High School with the class of 1926. She attended Iowa Wesleyan College one year, and returned to teach country school in the Sigourney and Knoxville areas. On February 9, 1929 she married Orris John Lane in Nebraska City, Nebraska. They farmed in Van Buren Township before moving to Sigourney in 1937.
Mrs. Lane was a member of the United Methodist Church where she impacted countless individual in the area of christian education. She was active in the United Methodist Women, the hand bell choir and was a 55 year member of the Order of the Eastren Star. For 25 years she was known as the "Bicycle riding newspaper lady"until a fall at the age of 90, which ended her career. She continued to be interested in and attended music programs and ball games in which her great- grandchildren participated.
Mrs Lane is survived by two sons,Oris John Lane Jr. and his wife Joan of Ames and Don Thomas Lane and his wife Linda of Sigourney, and Daughter Pauline Lane Hunter of Lexington, KY.nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, a niece Marie McCormick Pauwels of Chapel Hill, NC, and a nephew William Hazen of Athens, OH.
She was preceded in death by her husband Orris on July 4, 1977, her parents, two brothers Marian William Hazen of Live Oak, Fl, and Herbert Lial Hazen who died of the flu at the age of two and half years, two sisters Della Lousia Hazen Gould of Washington DC, Margaret Susanna Hazen McCormick of Chapel Hill, NC, a grandson of Lexington, KY, and a nephew Harold F. Gould Jr., of Sigourney.

Services: Tuesday at 10:30a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Sigourney, Iowa
Visitation: Tuesday 9:30 a.m. at the church
Burial: Johnson Cemetery rural Sigourney
