Esther Nichols

Esther Marie Nichols, 88, died May 12, 2016 at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield. She was born April 14, 1928 to D.W. and Ethel Geneva Strohman Bruns in Sigourney, Iowa. She graduated from Sigourney High School in 1945. On September 10, 1946 she married Roy Lee Nichols at the United Methodist Church in Sigourney. Esther was a bookkeeper for the Bruns family business first for her father and later for her brother Ralph.

Esther enjoyed spending time with her family as much as possible and was a devoted mother and grandmother. She became a foster grandparent volunteer when she moved to Ottumwa in the early 2000's. Esther loved to read and she reorganized the church library. She was a polio survivor and was active in helping others understanding post polio syndrome.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband December 28, 1985, two brothers Ernest Bruns and Ralph Bruns, one sister Dorothy Koch, one grandson Roy Travis Nichols.

She is survived by her children Jerry (Bonnie) Nichols of Murray, Utah, Jim (Martha) Nichols of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Jan (Sam) Erhardt of Ottumwa, and Jeff (Deb) Nichols of Grimes, ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren.

Burial: Pleasant Grove Cemetery - Sigourney

Visitation: Monday 2:00 - 3:00 P.M.
