Charles Herman

January 4, 1938 — February 14, 2024

Sigourney

Charles Edward Herman, 86, of Sigourney, IA, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 14, 2024, following a brief stay in hospice care. He was surrounded by loved ones. The family will greet friends from 4pm-7pm on Sunday, February 18th and on Monday, February 19th from 9-10:30 am with a funeral service immediately following at Holm Funeral Home in Sigourney, IA. Burial will take place at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney.

Charles was born January 4, 1938, in Oskaloosa, IA, the son of Louis J. and Marjorie E. (Inman) Herman. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school in Van Buren Township of Keokuk, County. In 1956, he graduated from Sigourney High School, where he formed several life-long relationships and was active in football and track. Following High School, he served in the US Army and Army Reserves and worked for the Rock Island Railroad in Depot Administration from 1957-1968. In 1969, Charles returned to rural Sigourney where he operated a grain and livestock farm for the next 40 years. He had four children with Julianne (Holub) Herman, Mike, Pat, Tom, and Cathy, and took great pride in following their activities and accomplishments. Charles and Julianne later divorced. In 1996, he married Linda (Brower) Herman, and the two resided in Sigourney until his passing.

Charles was a dear friend to many. He was an honest, supportive, and hard-working man. He was independent, reliable, and diligent in his work, caring most about a job well done. He enjoyed simple pleasures like taking short trips, fishing, and playing cards. He never wanted for the spotlight or the extravagant. His kids will quickly tell you that he was a world-class father, and he was recognized for his good nature by all who knew him.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Linda; his sister, Bettie (Robert) Tujetsch of Dyer, IN; his three sons Mike (Julie) Herman of Palatine, IL, Pat (Shannon) Herman of Medina, OH, and Tom (Sherri) Herman of Walnut Creek, CA; his daughter, Cathy Herman (John Robert) of Kalona, IA; grandchildren Ethan, Evan, Elise, Madison (Jared), Logan (Tyler), Sam, Riley, Ashley, and Andrew; greatgrandchildren Ana, Natalie, Owen, Arlo, and Paxton; his step-children, Scott (Keely) Brower of Washington, IA, and Lisa Hol of Sigourney, IA; step grandchildren and step great grandchildren, and many other cherished nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Louis J. Herman, Jr.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.                                                                  Isaiah 40:29-31
