Alice Martha (Black) Hootman, 110, died June 11, 2026, at the Manor House in Sigourney. She was born on January 26, 1916, to Kate (Collett) and Charles Black on their farm north of Fairfield, Iowa. She married Arthur C. Hootman on February 13, 1932. They had three children, D. Clair on September 10, 1933, Carol Gene, January 24, 1936, and Nancy Lea, September 10, 1940.
They lived on a farm North of Fairfield, Iowa, until 1949. They then moved to East of Vinton, Iowa. She was known to most people as “Sally” since her brother had a tough time saying Alice in his early years. She helped with the farming, cooking enough to feed an army, gardening, canning, and whatever job needed to be done. After the children graduated from high school, she worked at several businesses, the Benton County Home, The Iowa Braille, and Sight Saving School. She enjoyed leading a 4-H Club, bowling with groups of ladies, hunting morel mushrooms, mowing grass, and gardening. She always doted on her grandchildren. She traveled to Ear Falls Ontario in some of the later summers to help her son Carol with Timberlane Lodge after his sister and husband, Nancy and John, moved back to Iowa. In the mid 1980’s she and Art Moved to the Webster, Iowa community. She was a breast cancer survivor. She recently learned she was the oldest person in Iowa for a couple of years. One of her nicknames was “Perpetual Motion”!
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Arthur, sons Clair and Carol Hootman, son-in-law (her favorite) John S. Kerr.
She is survived by her daughter Nancy Kerr of Webster, Iowa, grandchildren: Jan (Nick) Berg of What Cheer, Iowa; Richard (Amy Parker) Kerr of South English, Iowa; and Lisa Martin of Monroe, Iowa, great-grandchildren: Aaron Berg, son Brady; Brandon (Julianna) Berg ,children Mabel, June and Iris of Keota, Iowa; Justin (Jen) Baumert Children Jordan, Jonah, and Josiah of Victor, Iowa; Mickayla Kerr and Brecken of North English, Iowa; Seth Kerr children Charlotte, Vivian, and Lincoln of North English, Iowa; Leah (John) Mather children Lucy and Ellie of Keota, Iowa; Zoey Parker of South English; Allison (Kevin)Langreck and Ava of Colfax, Iowa; Faith (Matt) Fisher children Paxton and Wrenley of Des Moines, Iowa; Jack (Brooke) Martin and Royce of Knoxville, Iowa; and Sarah (Coby Meyer) Martin and Braxton of Knoxville, Iowa
